We enjoyed a sunny winter day walking a circular route of 9 miles to Alport Castle from Upper Derwent.
The route starts from Upper Derwent Reservoir, next the Visitor Centre. There are few FREE of charge car park spaces but it gets busy early in the morning.
We walked through the forest with all of the clothes, gloves and hat on but as we started to ascend the sun was warming us nicely and we started to take the layers off. Hiking on a winder day is very important to have multiple layers rather than a big jacket. We had a Merino wool base layer, a RAB Alpine jacket and as outer layer we had the Mountain Equipment jacket which was in our the backpack all day. The Rab jacket is windproof and keeps you warm and dry.
Everything was frosty apart from a small waterfall. The water was rushing to finds it’s way to the reservoir and no obstacle could stop it.
The hiking route is moderate with few areas with rocky terrain, few muddy and wet or nice tarmac area.
The Alport Castles are a landslip feature in the Peak District National Park in Derbyshire. At over half a mile long, it is thought to be the largest landslide in the United Kingdom. The land is still slipping as you can noticed on the edge the different levels of land.
We had another great day outdoors enjoying the sunny winter day and the views. We finished the route before sunset with a smile on our face and full of energy.
